Our house is under the shade of a beautiful mango tree whose fruit is sweet, tart, sticky, juicy . . . a perfect match for this season of our lives.

Cheap fish
Sam, whose greatest love second to earning money is spending money (spending might be his first love, actually), finally saved up $3.50. He came with me to Wal-mart yesterday, a trip which Jane and Colin were loathe to make. He was looking for something he could buy with his savings. He almost gave in to the the Hagen-Daas cooler at the entrance, but I convinced him to look around. Charlie wanted to visit the fish -- the sick Walmart fish that look tattered and mangy, if a fish can have mange. That's when Sam noticed that fish are relatively inexpensive. He chose a red and blue beta fish, which I think he is naming "Beta." He walked around the store, holding his fish in a cup, and saying over and over again that he couldn't believe how cheap those fish were. "They're usually like twelve dollars or something. But these one were so cheap!" Then some boys at the end of the aisle said, "Let's go get a fish!" And Sam yelled after them, "Yeah! The fish are really cheap!" Maybe he should name his fish "Bargain" or "Mr. Deal." That seems to be what he was most excited about. Now that the fish is home, Sam is very anxious to clean the tank. He asked me twice today if I thought the tank had gotten too dirty yet.
